Saint Joseph's College, also known as Saint Joe or simply SJC, is a coeducational, private, Roman Catholic liberal arts college located in Rensselaer, which is the county seat of Jasper County, situated along the Iroquois River in Marion Township, in the US state of Indiana, with a population estimated at a number of more than 8000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Saint Joe was established in 1889, by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, originally having the mission to educated Native Americans, and it is known today for its groundbreaking, and nationally recognized, Core Education Program. The college has a total enrollment of approximately 1000 students, who can choose from various educational programs, offered at SJC, in numerous fields of study, including in history, political science, natural science, literature, and philosophy.
Saint Joe's athletic teams are known as the Pumas, who compete in 18 sports, in NCAA Division II, SJC being the only post-secondary institution in the United States with the Puma as its mascot. The Pumas have experienced success in many of the sports in whic they compete, including in baseball, in which they were runner-ups to the Division II National Championship, in 1996, and women's soccer, in which they have been runner-ups, in the same year. Their distinctive colors are purple and cardinal.
Award-winning sports columnist Jim Sacco, Major League Baseball player Gil Hodges, Philip F. Deaver, writer and poet, former Canadian Member of Parliament and Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons Gilbert Parent and former Chicago Alderman Edward Vrydolak, are Saint Joe's most notable alumni.
